Amazfit Helio Strap vs JCVital Pro V8: Which Band Lets You Record an ECG on Demand?

28 Oct 2026

To record an ECG on demand, a band needs electrodes you can touch, and the JCVital Pro V8 builds them into the side of the band. Rest a fingertip on them whenever you choose, and the V8 takes a single-lead ECG recording that appears as a waveform with software-generated rhythm insights in the JCVital Pro App. Amazfit's spec sheet for the Helio Strap lists an optical PPG sensor (BioTracker 6.0) and doesn't list ECG recording. Both screenless bands track sleep stages, sleep HRV, and blood oxygen.

When an ECG Recording Comes in Handy

With an on-demand band, an ECG is something you start yourself: a fingertip on the electrodes and about half a minute of sitting still, wherever you happen to be. Because it takes so little, recordings tend to gather around a few kinds of moments.

One is a moment when your heartbeat feels different. It seems to flutter, skip, or race while you're sitting at your desk. Taking a recording right then gives you a waveform and the app's rhythm insights from that exact stretch of time, for your own awareness. If that sensation ever comes with chest pain, fainting, or real difficulty breathing, skip the recording and call 911.

Another is an ordinary one. Some people take a recording on a relaxed morning every so often, seated and before work, to build a personal reference. Later recordings then have your own earlier tracings and rhythm insights, taken in similar conditions, to sit beside.

The third is a checkup on the calendar. A few recent recordings in the JCVital Pro App give you something concrete to open and talk through during the visit. Pick them ahead of time: one relaxed morning reference and the recording from the moment you want to mention, each with a line about what you were doing when you took it.

Spec Sheets Read With ECG in Mind

This table sticks to items both brands publish on their official pages and manuals.

Question for an ECG buyer Amazfit Helio Strap JCVital Pro V8
On-demand ECG recording Not listed on Amazfit's spec sheet Supported, single-lead through side electrodes, about 30 seconds
Health sensor named in the specs BioTracker 6.0 PPG (5PD + 2LED) PPG, temperature, and motion
Sleep signals both list Sleep stages including REM, sleep HRV, sleep score Sleep Stages, HRV, Sleep Score
All-day heart tracking Continuous heart rate, per second Heart rate in the background
Stress Stress level Everyday stress patterns
Blood oxygen Blood-oxygen saturation Overnight SpO₂ trends
Price $99.99 $179

Outside the ECG row, the two lists overlap closely, from sleep and all-day heart tracking to stress and blood oxygen.

Looking Back at a Recording Later

On the V8, the waveform opens in the JCVital Pro App alongside software-generated rhythm insights, and earlier recordings stay in the app for you to come back to. You can open the tracing you took on a tense afternoon and look at it next to one from a slow morning a few weeks before.

If you're curious how a wrist recording relates to the ECG taken at a clinic, our piece on how a wrist single-lead ECG compares with a 12-lead ECG covers what each one is used for.

Recordings are easier to compare when they're taken the same way: seated, with the banded arm resting on a table or your lap, at roughly the same time of day. A short note on your phone or in a notebook about what was going on helps too, such as whether you'd just climbed stairs, had a second coffee, or were in the middle of a stressful call. Then compare like with like, a seated morning reference against another seated morning reference and a recording after the stairs against another after the stairs.

Between ECGs, the V8 keeps following heart rate, HRV, and sleep in the background, and the app shows everyday stress patterns alongside HRV and recovery context. So when you look back at an afternoon recording, you can also see how that day's stress pattern ran and how you slept the night before. A tracing taken after a short, broken night and a busy morning was recorded under different circumstances from one taken after a full night's sleep and a slow start, and the app keeps both sides of that story.

Is ECG a Must-Have or a Maybe for You?

If you'd like to take a recording whenever your heartbeat feels different, and keep your own tracings to look back on over months, ECG is a must-have, and the V8 puts it on a band you'd be wearing anyway. The same goes if you mostly want one band for day and night and like knowing ECG is there for the occasional moment. Sleep tracking and ECG share one band, so there's only one device to charge.

If ECG sounds interesting but you can't think of a time you'd use it, and most of your attention goes to workouts, the Helio Strap is built around training, with upper-arm wear and more than 50 sports modes.

ECG on the Side of the JCVital Pro V8

The V8's ECG electrodes sit on the side of the band. To take a recording, you place a fingertip from your other hand on them, keep your arm relaxed and still for roughly 30 seconds, and the tracing appears in the JCVital Pro App with its rhythm insights. ECG recording on the V8 is for personal wellness awareness, and its insights are not intended for diagnosis or treatment.

The rest of the time, the band runs as a screenless tracker, following heart rate, HRV, SpO₂, temperature, and motion in the background. In the JCVital Pro App, you review your supported recordings and the wellness information that goes with them under ECG Insights, in the same app that holds your sleep stages, HRV, and stress patterns. JCVital products are designed for health and wellness management and lifestyle reference only. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and do not replace professional medical advice or medical devices.

ECG Questions to Settle Before You Buy

Can the heart rate the Helio Strap tracks all day stand in for an ECG? They measure different things. The Helio Strap's PPG sensor follows your pulse optically, which suits heart rate, HRV, and sleep trends. An ECG records the heart's electrical signal as a waveform. If seeing that waveform matters to you, you need a band with ECG recording built in, such as the V8.

Does the ECG side cost anything after I buy the V8? The JCVital Pro App lists ECG Insights as available with the V8, and the app doesn't charge a monthly subscription. Your waveforms and their rhythm insights sit in the same app as your sleep stages and HRV, so the $179 you pay for the band covers recording and reviewing them.

Can I take a recording right after a workout? A tracing made while your pulse is still winding down from exercise is captured under different conditions from the relaxed, seated recordings you take on ordinary mornings. If you like recording after training, note how long it's been since you stopped and try to keep that gap similar each time. Our guide to recording an ECG after a workout walks through how the tracing changes as you cool down.

Does it matter which wrist I wear the V8 on? Pick one wrist and stay with it. The V8 manual places the band roughly an inch (2.5 cm) above the wrist bone, and keeping it in the same spot means your other hand reaches the side electrodes the same way each time, while your background trends keep coming from the same place.

Can I record while I'm walking or on the move? Stop and sit down first. A recording asks you to keep your arm relaxed and still for roughly 30 seconds, and movement adds noise to the tracing. Resting the banded arm on a table or your lap, the same way you take your morning references, also keeps the new recording comparable with your earlier ones.

Do I need to record every day to get much out of the ECG feature? Daily recording isn't the point of an on-demand feature. Most people record when a moment calls for it and add an occasional reference tracing on a relaxed morning. The background tracking that builds your sleep and HRV trends runs on its own, so the ECG side can stay something you use only when you choose to.
